Portrait Tattoos

Realistic portrait tattoos in San Diego — family, memorial and icon portraits by Fabio Fontinelle

A portrait has no room for error — a few millimeters decide whether the face reads as the person you love. Fabio maps bone structure, skin texture and light before the needle ever touches skin, and has spent more than 20 years turning photographs into black and gray portraits that keep their likeness as they heal. Every portrait begins with a consultation at his Bay Park studio in San Diego.

What makes a portrait hold

Fabio approaches each portrait like a photographic study: bone structure, the exact geometry of eyes and mouth, skin texture, the catchlights that make a face feel alive — all mapped in the drawing before the tattoo begins. Over more than 20 years he has tattooed family portraits, memorial pieces and icons — Muhammad Ali, Martin Luther King Jr., Einstein — in smooth black and gray that keeps its likeness as it heals. Most portraits take one to two sessions at his Bay Park studio in San Diego. Bring two or three sharp reference photos to your consultation: Fabio will tell you honestly what will translate to skin, at what size, and where it will age best.

A likeness isn't drawn — it's measured. Every face is mapped before the needle touches skin.
